Central Saint Martins is staging an exhibition titled ‘I’m Deep – What physically remains as time goes by…’ in collaboration with Kenji Hirasawa this autumn. The exhibition will take place in one of the College’s window galleries.

In 2011, Central Saint Martins lost one of its beloved students, the South-Korean native Deep Lee, through a tragic accident near King’s Cross station. Deep moved to London dreaming of becoming a fashion designer and to study menswear design at Central Saint Martins.

At the time her life was taken, Deep was cycling to College for the first day of her final year of BA Fashion. She was about to start making her graduation collection. Cycling was central to Deep’s ideal lifestyle and it seems unimaginable that she lost her life doing something she loved.

This exhibition will highlight Deep’s life as a designer, showcasing sketches,illustrations, garments and a recreation of her work studio. The core of Deep’s design is craftsmanship and through this exhibition, viewers are encouraged to examine ‘the value of good craftsmanship’.

In Deep’s notebook, she quoted Richard Sennett, “The Craftsman names a basic human impulse; the desire to do a job well for its own sake.” Although the word may suggest a way of life that waned with the advent of industrial society, Sennett argues that the craftsman’s realm is far broader than skilled manual labor;
the computer programmer, the doctor, the parent, and the citizen need to learn the value of good craftsmanship today.

University of the Arts London and Deep Lee’s family created the Deep Lee Award for final year menswear design students in 2012. The award has been created to encourage younger generations to value and explore craftsmanship. Please donate if you can, to this beautiful fund.

3rd- 24th October 2014 (Mon – Sun 10am – 6pm)

Window Gallery, Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design Granary Building, 1 Granary Square, London, N1C 4AA
